Rodent Tissue
Rodent tissue sections are used in the detection of anti-nuclear, anti-mitochondrial, anti-smooth muscle and anti-gastric parietal cell antibodies. Binding Site offer both rat and mouse tissue as complete kits or individual slides.
Anti Nuclear Antibodies (ANA)
High titres of ANA are found in patients with connective tissue or rheumatic diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). These antibodies are demonstrated by specific staining of cell nuclei with a variety of patterns such as homogenous, nucleolar, speckled, etc. Mouse or rat liver is the traditional tissue substrate, however, most ANA testing is now performed using HEp-2 cells or enzyme immunoassay.
Anti Mitochondrial Antibodies (AMA)
Antibodies to mitochondria are frequently present at high titre in cases of primary biliary cirrhosis. Composite sections of rat or mouse liver, kidney, stomach are recommended for AMA demonstration.
Anti Gastric Parietal Cell Antibodies (GPC)
Anti-gastric parietal cell antibodies (GPC) are present in 90% of patients with atrophic gastritis and pernicious anaemia. They are also found in 40% of patients with thyroid disease and, at low titre, in 10 to 15% of elderly patients without evidence of associated disease. Composite sections of mouse kidney and stomach are recommended for GPC demonstration.
Anti Smooth Muscle Antibodies (SMA)
Anti-smooth muscle antibodies (SMA) are found at high titre in 70% of patients with chronic active hepatitis. Low titre antibodies may be found in the sera of patients with viral infections, malignancies and in the normal population. SMA show discrete staining of the muscularis layers of rodent stomach and may also be seen on the inner muscular layers of blood vessels in rodent kidney.
